How to Choose a Concrete Company in Cedar Park
Cedar Park sits right on the edge of the Edwards Plateau. Under much of the west side, the soil is a thin layer of rocky, calcareous clay sitting on hard limestone, and in places the bedrock comes right to the surface (USGS, Austin-area hydrologic study). That rock was valuable enough that limestone quarrying was a main local industry from the 1890s until about 1970 (Texas State Historical Association). For concrete, it means two lots on the same street can need different prep: one where the crew levels base over solid ledge, and one where clay-filled seams have to come out first.
So the useful questions for any concrete contractor near you are about the ground: Did they probe the subgrade before pricing? What do they do if they hit rock while digging, and what does that cost? Where will control joints go, and how deep? A good concrete company answers all three in writing before you sign.
We'll be honest about the trade-off, too. Digging into ledge rock with a breaker costs more than digging dirt, and we can't always know how much until the first test hole is open. When that's a risk on your lot, the estimate says so and puts a price on it, so you don't find out halfway through.
How Much Does Concrete Cost in Cedar Park?
Most residential concrete is priced by the square foot, but the pour itself is just one piece of the bill. These are the items that move a Cedar Park estimate up or down. We don't post per-foot prices, because prep varies so much from lot to lot here.
| Job | What sets the price here |
|---|---|
| Concrete driveway | Tear-out tonnage, the approach permit if you touch the curb, 5 vs 6 inch thickness, rock excavation |
| Concrete patio | Access for the truck or a pump, steps off the door, a cover or post footings, finish |
| Stamped concrete | Pattern, how many colors, borders, and how many cuts the shape needs |
| Slab or pad | Thickened edges, rebar grid, vapor barrier, plumbing or conduit penetrations |
| Stone or brick masonry | Stone type (local limestone vs. manufactured), wall height, scaffolding, matching existing brick |
| Removing old concrete | Thickness, whether it's reinforced, haul-off distance |
Rough out your concrete volume
Measure the area in feet. A driveway or garage apron is usually 5 to 6 inches thick; a patio or walk is usually 4.
Shallow Rock or Clay Pocket? Two Kinds of Cedar Park Subgrade
Common on the higher ground toward the west. Bearing is excellent. The work is in leveling: we trim high spots, then fill low ones with compacted base so the slab is an even thickness. An uneven slab cracks at the thin spots.
Where the limestone is fractured, clay fills the gaps, and clay swells when it's wet and shrinks when it's dry. We dig out the soft pockets and replace them with base, so the slab doesn't end up sitting on stiff rock in one spot and moving clay in the next.
Newer lots are often graded with fill brought in from elsewhere. If it wasn't compacted in layers, it settles. We probe it, and if it's soft we compact it or replace it before we set forms.
Our Concrete Process, Start to Finish
- Site visit and probe. We measure, check drainage, and push a probe or dig a test hole where the ground looks questionable.
- Written estimate. It lists thickness, reinforcement, joint layout, finish, tear-out, permits, and any rock allowance.
- Permits and locates. We call Texas811 before digging, as state law requires, and file city paperwork when the job needs it.
- Prep and forms. Excavation, base, compaction, forms and steel. You can walk it before the pour.
- Pour and finish. We schedule summer pours for early morning so the concrete doesn't set too fast in the heat.
- Cure and hand-off. You get written instructions for when you can walk on it, park on it, and seal it.
Concrete Contractor Questions We Hear in Cedar Park
Do you pour on top of the limestone or dig it out?
It depends on what we find. Where sound rock sits a few inches down, we level it with compacted base and pour on it, which is about as stable as subgrade gets. Where the rock is broken up with pockets of clay, we dig the clay out of the pockets, because those are the spots that move.
How soon can you come look at my project?
Most site visits in Cedar Park get booked within the week. The written estimate usually follows within a couple of days of the visit, and it lists thickness, reinforcement, finish and what we are tearing out.
Will I need a city permit?
Some jobs do and some don't. Anything that touches the driveway approach or the city right-of-way does, and larger structural work does. For everything else, we check the Cedar Park Permit Guide and call Permits & Inspections when it's unclear, so the answer is in writing before we start.
What happens if it rains on pour day?
We move the pour. A light sprinkle after finishing is usually fine under a cover, but we won't place concrete into standing water or ahead of a storm cell. You'll get the new date the same day.
Do you handle HOA approvals?
We give you the drawing, the material and the color for your architectural committee packet. You send it in, since the HOA wants it from the owner. Plenty of Cedar Park neighborhoods require approval before a driveway widening or a new patio.
